Somebody figured out a clever sort of business builder and they called it the Hall of Fame. The idea was that you would get this tee shirt with 100 different beers listed on the front. Each time you would order one of the beers in your friendly participating bar the bartender would stamp a little fill-in box next to the beer. When you got all 100 fill-in boxes stamped you were in the Hall of Fame.

Most of the places and most of the beers were in a word EXPENSIVE! A guy could easily spend $500 getting in the imaginary Hall of Fame. Since we were all just 18-years-old and out of high school $500 was a lot of cash.

Most of the guys I know went for Hall of Fame like they go for Monday night football. Most of the girls I know did not go for the Hall of Fame. Times were a little tough and the girls wanted the $500 spent quite a bit differently. The difference of opinion led to quite a few knockdown drag-out yelling screaming fights between guys and girls.

Ostensibly I was reading but it was hard to keep my eyes focused on the page. I was sitting at a small table near the pool in my hotel sipping an iced coffee drink and waiting for my traveling companions to wake up this fine morning. Probably it would be an hour or two hence the book.

I was on my fourth re-reading of the same stupid paragraph when I glanced up again forgetting what I was reading. The object of this glance was the young woman who had recently taken the table next to me. Long blonde hair deeply tanned skin average height average weight symmetrical face–in short what many men would take to be ideally attractive. Not really the type I usually look for in a partner but I couldn t deny that I d love to get in her pants. Not that she was wearing any. She had come to sit and read the newspaper in a skimpy white bikini. Probably relished the furtive looks of men who knew they d never have a chance with her. She certainly wasn t making any move toward the pool.

Mary woke up and stretched feeling safe and satisfied had to be early morning because it was still dark. She was still lying in Alisha and Steve s bed. Spotlights illuminated the long white marble countertop of the bar. The bartender sleeves rolled up to his elbows quietly washed glasses in the bar sink. At the end of the bar a female customer in a light gray business suit sits idly swirling her martini in its glass. It was that in between time of the day for the bar like the dusk between light and dark. The evening crowd wouldn’t wander in for another hour or two and the last of the lunch crowd had left.
